Major project: Managing coverage of the anniversary of the war in Ukraine

In February 2023, I was tasked with managing Upday's content for the anniversary of the war in Ukraine. From start to finish, I took ownership of this project – I commissioned stories, wrote several features, interviewed experts, and scheduled content for publication. Below is a selection of stories I wrote or edited that were published throughout the week leading up to the anniversary of Russia's invasion – including a translated piece from one of Upday's reporters on Ukraine's border with Poland.

'It's a bit of a wild west': Homes for Ukraine hosts take matters into their own hands

Russia's invasion of Ukraine one year ago triggered a major refugee crisis; millions of Ukrainians were displaced from their homes, flowing into neighbouring countries like Poland, Bulgaria, Moldova and Slovakia. In the UK, we watched from afar as Ukrainians fled their homes, walked for hours to reach border crossings and said tearful goodbyes to loved ones staying behind to fight. And in a small village in Cheshire, phones started ringing.

It has been one year since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began and there are still no signs of the conflict ending any time soon. Ahead of the anniversary, the UK's defence secretary, Ben Wallace said the way Russian President Vladimir Putin was content to operate his army like a “meat grinder” meant “he is not going to stop” the war – despite incurring horrific casualties.
